Chapter Twenty-Six

RONAN

While Astra and Ehren go off to complete their plan to rescue Saran, I accompany Jess and her army back to the Summer Palace. Unfortunately the Fae also go with us. As soon as we arrive, a breathless Cadewynn races out to greet us, her eyes wide with delight as she takes in the Fae as well as their Unicorn. A guard whose name I don’t remember accompanies her.

“Princess Cadewynn, meet Hycis, Rynia, Ievis, and Iefyr of the Fae,” Jess says with a grin, motioning to each of them in turn.

The princess dips into a low curtesy. “The pleasure is all very much mine.”

Hycis grins wickedly, stepping forward. “First a human prince and now a proper human princess.”

Cadewynn’s smile falters slightly as Hycis circles her. The guard stiffens, his hand on his sword as he takes a step closer. Hycis notices his movements and focuses her sharp glare on the young man.

“Do you assume I’m going to hurt your precious little princess?”

The guard straightens, meeting Hycis’s eyes without fear. “I assume everyone is a threat until proven otherwise, and even then trust must be earned.”

“Nyco,” Cadewynn whispers. “I’m sure she’s no threat or she wouldn’t be here.”

The guard—Nyco, I suppose—steps closer to her, slipping his hand into hers.

“I’m not going to let my guard down, Winnie, just because they’re invited guests. Protecting you is my priority.”

Cadewynn smiles softly and leans into him. Ah, so he’s more than just her guard.

“Now that is adorable,” Hycis says with a laugh. She takes a step closer so she’s inches away from Nyco, her eyes boring into his. “Do you really think if it came down to it you could actually win in a fight against me?”

A smile curls on Nyco’s lips. “I think I might surprise you, but even if I lost, it would be worth it if I could keep her safe for even one moment.”

A hearty laugh breaks free from Hycis and she steps back to Rynia’s side. “Oh, I do love you humans! Don’t worry, little soldier, your princess is safe.”

“Perhaps we should all head inside out of the courtyard?” Cadewynn suggests tentatively, her eyes flitting over our traveling party. They settle on Jess. “Are Kaeya and Brock back, as well?”

Jess nods. “They’ve taken the army around to the barracks but Kaeya, at least, will join me soon with the weapons and berries.”

“We have the berries?” Cadewynn asks, her eyes going wide.

Ievis scoffs. “Why else did you think we were here?”

Cadewynn blinks and I step forward, pushing in front of Ievis. “Ignore him. He gets grumpy when he hasn’t had a chance to get in a nap. He’s old and frail, you see.”

Ievis growls and mutters something under his breath that I’m positive is swearing in his Fae tongue, but Iefyr lets out a small laugh. The tension is broken, however, and Cadewynn’s gentle smile returns.

“All right then. Follow me inside and we’ll get everyone settled. Then we can go over our plans with the weapons and how to take down Kato and his Dragkonians.
